Description

Magical - Well-Designed - Elegant
In the spring of 1907, Maffei received an order to build a Pacific compound locomotive for the Royal Bavarian State Railways. Using its own Baden "IV f" locomotive design as a basis, Maffei developed the Bavarian S 3/6, which was soon to fascinate generations of railroad fans with its timeless, elegant looks characterized chiefly by the four-cylinder compound running gear.

Prototype: Bavarian type S 3/6 express steam locomotive with a type 2´2 T32.5 coal tender of the Royal Bavarian State Railways (K.Bay.Sts.B.). Subclass d, the "Hochhaxige" / "High Stepper" with 2,000 mm / 78-3/4" diameter driving wheels.Road number 3627. The loco looks as it did around 1912.

Highlights

  • Intricate running gear constructed of metal with a partially open bar frame.
  • Striking, large drive wheels (2,000 mm / 78-3/4" on the prototype).
  • Smoke generator kit fitted as standard.
  • Detailed cab with digitally controllable cab lighting.
  • RailCom-enabled DCC/mfx digital decoder with extensive sound and light functions.
  • A buffer capacitor to bridge short unpowered sections of track is fitted.
  • The front buffer height conforms to NEM specifications.

Model: The model has a digital decoder and extensive sound functions.
It also has a controlled high-performance motor with a flywheel, mounted in the boiler. Three axles on the model are powered. The locomotive and tender are made mostly of metal. The running gear is intricately constructed of metal with a partially open bar frame. There is an open view through the running gear.
Dual headlights change over with the direction of travel, will work in conventional operation, and can be controlled digitally. The oncoming train light is separately controllable. The lamps are designed to be white. Maintenance-free, warm-white LEDs are used for the lighting. The factory-installed smoke generator kit works in conventional operation. The cab is modeled in detail, and the cab lighting is digitally controllable. There is a close-coupler mechanism between the locomotive and tender with a "display case position." The tender has a close coupling with a guide mechanism and an NEM pocket. The front buffer height conforms to NEM specifications. Intricate smokebox door steps, a hook coupler and air hose for the rear of the tender, and protective piston sleeves are also included.
Length over the buffers 26.7 cm / 10-1/2".
