Description

CPKC acquired 8 GE ET44ACs in November 2024. Originally built as GECX Demonstrators, they were modified for Baffinland Iron Mines, which never took delivery due to mining delays and were reverted to Wabtec in 2023. CPKC had them refitted at Wabtec’s Albia, Iowa, facility, stripping arctic mods, repainting them into CPKC colors, and re-numbering them as CP 7430-7437.

CPKC, the first and only single-line railroad spanning Canada, the United States, and Mexico, has added its first new locomotives to its roster nearly two years after its landmark merger. The eight General Electric ET44ACs, acquired in late 2023, were originally built for Baffinland Iron Mines on Canada’s remote Baffin Island. Intended to haul iron ore to port, the units—painted in a striking red Baffinland scheme and numbered BMIR 7001-7008—were sidelined when the mining project hit repeated delays, prompting Baffinland to end the lease in September 2023.

Formed on April 14, 2023, through the $31 billion merger of Canadian Pacific (CP) and Kansas City Southern (KCS), CPKC operates a sprawling 20,000-mile network across three nations. With headquarters in Calgary, Alberta, Kansas City, Missouri, and Mexico City, the Class I railroad employs roughly 20,000 people and serves as a critical artery for North American trade. The merger united CP’s northern reach—from Vancouver to Montreal—with KCS’s southern corridors, linking key markets like Chicago, Texas, and Mexico’s industrial hubs. This transnational footprint gives CPKC a unique edge, moving everything from grain and coal to intermodal freight with unmatched efficiency.

The ET44ACs trace their roots to GE’s test fleet, built between 2013 and 2014 as GECX Nos. 2025, 2028, 2030-2032, and 2020-2022. Initially experimental units for Tier 4 emissions standards, they were later upgraded by GE for Baffinland’s Arctic conditions, becoming ET44ACATs with cold-weather enhancements. After CPKC’s purchase, the locomotives were sent to Wabtec’s Albia, Iowa, facility, where their arctic features were removed, their silhouettes refined, and a new CP livery applied, renumbering them as CP 7430-7437.

This acquisition marks a practical boost for CPKC, which hadn’t seen new locomotive purchases from its predecessor companies since KCS’s order in 2019 and CP’s in 2012. The addition comes as CPKC ramps up capacity to meet growing demand—evidenced by its 2024 revenue of $13.9 billion and a 9% earnings jump in Q4, as reported in January 2025. With initiatives like the new Patrick J. Ottensmeyer International Railway Bridge in Laredo, opened in February 2025, and a push into hydrogen-powered locomotives, CPKC is flexing its muscle as a forward-thinking player in freight transport.

In late November, CP 7431 and 7433 made their revenue debut, hauling train 253 from Kansas City to Chicago—a symbolic first run for units that once faced an uncertain fate. For CPKC, these locomotives aren’t just horsepower; they’re a signal of adaptability, turning a stalled northern venture into fuel for a continent-spanning powerhouse.
