The Class 188 multi-system locomotives belong to the TRAXX MS3 family and were designed specifically for international freight transport. Thanks to their ability to operate on the alternating and direct current systems commonly used in Central Europe, they enable continuous operation across national borders without time-consuming locomotive changes. Modern ETCS equipment and numerous national train protection systems make these locomotives universally deployable across the most important European freight corridors.
The locomotives are operated by leasing companies such as Akiem and Railpool, as well as by various freight operators in several European countries. These include, amongst others, CFL Cargo Deutschland, which deploys the locomotives on long-distance routes.
