In 1969, the French State Railways (SNCF) brought the CC 6500 electric locomotives into service - the most powerful in French railway history to date. A total of 74 locomotives were built in three series, each with different side panels. In their early years of service, the locomotives were mainly used to haul prominent express trains such as the "Mistral" and the "Capitole" because of their top speed of 200 km/h.
