The BB 22200 is a French electric locomotive class designed for use on both SNCF's 1.5 kV DC and 25 kV 50 Hz AC networks. The locomotives, featuring the so-called ‘nez cassé' (broken nose), were designed by the Frenchman Paul Arzens, who was responsible for the design of several SNCF locomotives at the time. Between 1976 and 1986, Alstom built 205 locomotives altogether in six production series. Thanks to their multi-system capability and their design as universal locomotives, the BB 22200s are used on almost all standard-gauge electrified lines in France to haul both freight and passenger trains.
