In the second half of the 1970s, Skoda developed the second generation of universal electric locomotives to renew the CSD's fleet. The result was the S 499.2 series. The letter 'S' stands for 'alternating current'. Two prototype locomotives were delivered in 1984 and underwent thorough testing. With an hourly output of 3,060 kW, they can reach a maximum speed of 120 km/h. Ten locomotives were delivered in series in 1988, designated 263. These locomotives are owned by ZSSK, are based in Bratislava, and generally serve the Bratislava-Břeclav route.
