During the development of the Class V 60 shunting locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (Ost), testing of the first two prototype locomotives began in 1959. Before series production could begin, a number of design changes were required and were tested in a further small series of five locomotives. Between 1962 and 1964, the first series of 163 locomotives was delivered to the DR by LKM Babelsberg. Whilst the first main series was still under construction, a rain canopy was fitted above the side windows. The front ends of the locomotive hoods were also slightly modified. Unlike the first locomotives, whose hoods had slightly curved front ends around a vertical axis, resulting in protruding lamps mounted on brackets, the new hoods from locomotive number V 60 1053 onwards had straight front ends, except for rounded corners, with the lamps mounted directly on the front.
