The locomotives of the 2143 class were built between 1964 and 1977 and operated on non-electrified main and branch lines, particularly in eastern Austria. They were commonly used for both passenger and goods trains. A total of 77 locomotives were delivered to the ÖBB by the Simmering-Graz-Pauker-Werke.
A large part of the 2143 class locomotive stock consisted of the third production series, which was further divided into subclasses. The so-called 3a class included running numbers 2143.34 - 43, while the 3b class covered 2143.44 - 70. All locomotives in the third series share several common features: the frame is straight and, unlike the first series, not cranked. The areas around the driver's cab doors have long rain gutters, and the door windows are framed in metal. Likewise, the fuel-filling areas were redesigned and have different dimensions.
