The steam locomotive 58 3005 belonged to Class 58.30 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and was thus one of the most distinctive rebuilt locomotives of the GDR. The class was based on the tried-and-tested five-axle coupled freight locomotives of the G 12 type. Between 1958 and 1962, the Deutsche Reichsbahn had a total of 56 locomotives extensively modernised at the Zwickau repair works. Among other things, they were fitted with a more powerful reconstruction boiler and given a significantly altered appearance.
58 3005 was initially based at Dresden-Friedrichstadt, among other places, before being transferred to the Glauchau depot in 1970. A distinctive feature of the locomotive was its 2'2'T26 tender, which it retained until the end of its service life.
