The S 160 "The Yank" or "Rattlesnake" were originally war locomotives of the United States Army Transportation Corps (USATC). These locomotives had to be deployable worldwide, so they conformed to the British loading gauge, which is one of the most restrictive on standard-gauge railways. A total of 2.120 units were manufactured, making this class one of the most widely built locomotive classes in the world. The name ‘Rattlesnake' derives from the characteristic rattling sound of the controls.
