The CSD Class 477.0 represents the final and most technically advanced class of steam locomotive produced by the Czechoslovak State Railways (CSD). A total of 60 units were manufactured between 1951 and 1955 by CKD (CKD Sokolovo in Prague) and the class evolved from the preceding Class 476.1. The locomotives were designed as powerful express tender locomotives with a 2'D2' wheel arrangement for heavy passenger service and, with a service weight of around 131 tonnes, were considered among the heaviest tender locomotives in Europe at the time.
The three-cylinder locomotives reached a maximum speed of around 100 km/h and had a starting tractive effort of almost 110 kN. Visually, the 477.0 class was characterised by striking lines, featuring a streamlined firebox, Witte wind deflectors and an elegant, usually colourful paint scheme with decorative stripes. This earned it the nickname ‘Papousek' (parrot) in everyday service.
