In total, only 10 of these tender locomotives, each weighing around 133 tonnes, were built for operation on the so-called Höllentalbahn. The Class 85 locomotives were therefore the heaviest tender locomotives ever used in Germany. Thanks to their tractive effort, these stocky-looking tender locomotives quickly proved their worth on the mountain line.
