For decades, the n-coaches of the Deutsche Bundesbahn were known as Silberlinge. With over 5.000 units, this family of carriages became the dominant type of DB commuter coaches from the 1960s onwards. Multiple units and double-deck coaches gradually replaced them, but this did not happen until the 1990s.
Typical features of the design from the seventies to the nineties were the ocean blue long beams, the large class numbers and the pictograms. The prototypes were at home in Freiburg im Breisgau. From there, they were used on the Rhine Valley railway between Basel and Karlsruhe, as well as on the Höllentalbahn and diesel-hauled to Breisach and Elzach.
From the mid-seventies, individual Silberlinge were provided with advertising on their side walls. As with the S-Bahn vehicles in the metropolitan areas, the DB Design Centre had already approved so-called "advertising spaces" for commercial advertising, which could be used accordingly.
