Description

Travel as in Grandmother's Time
We are talking about the Sixties. It was the time when a modern German Federal Railroad had already broken into a new time period. In the Swabian Bottwar Valley, there was still a narrow gauge rail line on which the DB was using its last two-axle wooden body cars for the period of the Royal Württemberg State Railways in everyday operation. They offered trips such as during Grandmother's time at a speed for picking flowers while TEE trains whizzed at the same time through the countryside at 160 km/h / 100 mph. 1966 was the end and the primeval wooden class old-timer were to go for scrap. Yet, in 1967 student transport was resumed again after a long absence on the nearby Jagsttal Railroad. The SWEG as the operator of the line was looking for affordable locomotives and cars and acquired from the German Federal Railroad four Bottwartal Railroad cars as the type M-D 1, 2, 3, and 4. The student trains ran until 1979, and the youngsters enjoyed repeatedly the special riding experience with wooden benches and open platforms. Starting in 1971 the Württemberg cars also formed the basis for the extremely successful historic train operations on the scenically attractive, 39 kilometer / 24 mile Jagsttal Railroad. The type M-D 3 car remained in operation until the cessation of the line. Currently, it is in Dörzbach and waits to be overhauled. It is a real a real gem because this two-axle car originally put into service in 1924 is the last completely preserved example of this Württemberg 750 mm / 30 inch narrow gauge passenger car built in the largest numbers. The new LGB model reminds people perfectly (along with 798.101 locomotive with a tender) of the fascinating, 125 year old history of the Jagsttal Railroad.
