Operation with battery-powered railcars was introduced in Germany even before the First World War. The two-part battery-powered railcar of the "Wittfeld" type, with its batteries housed in the distinctive bonnet, remained in service until after the Second World War. After 1945, the Deutsche Bundesbahn revisited this type of propulsion. The ETA 176 earned the nickname "Limburger Zigarre", but only eight units were built. From 1953 onwards, the more cost-effective ETA 150, offering roughly the same performance, was put into service in large numbers. By 1965, a total of 232 units of the ETA 150 (class 515 from 1968) had been built. Furthermore, 216 control cab coaches of the ESA 150 type (later class 815) were put into service.
