With the single-engine VT 95 railbus, Deutsche Bundesbahn introduced a vehicle from 1952 onwards that was intended to make passenger transport on less-frequented branch lines more economical. The VT 95 was fitted with an underfloor-mounted diesel engine and mechanical power transmission, reaching a top speed of 90 km/h. It usually operated in conjunction with a matching trailer. Its simple, robust design and low running costs made it the "saviour of the branch lines".
Following the introduction of the computerised numbering system, the VT 95 was given the new class designation 795 in 1968, whilst the trailers were designated 995. The vehicles remained in regular service until the early 1980s and have since been preserved as operational historical vehicles at numerous heritage railways.
