The Class E 41 locomotives (Class 141 from 1968 onward) were first delivered to the Deutsche Bundesbahn in 1956 for light and mixed service on main lines. They had a maximum speed of 120 km/h and a continuous power output of 2,310 kW. As the only class in the standardised locomotive programme, they were fitted with a tap changer on the low-voltage side of the transformer. The tap changer produced a characteristic sound, which, together with the large jumps in tractive effort, led to the nickname "Knallfrosch" ("Firecracker"). From 1987 onwards, the locomotives were given an orient red livery.
