As the highlight of goods traffic, the class 151 locomotives hauled the heaviest ore trains in Western Europe from 1976, running between the North Sea ports and the Peine-Salzgitter steelworks, as well as to the Saarland. The trains reached loads of up to 5,700 tonnes. They operated exclusively in double traction and with automatic couplings, as conventional screw couplings would not have withstood the extremely high tractive forces.
