The Re 4/4 II are universal locomotives and are therefore used to haul both passenger and goods trains. Heavy trains are typically operated in double traction together with a Re 6/6. With 277 units delivered between 1964 and 1985, the Re 4/4 II series represents the largest class of traction units in the SBB fleet.
