In the booming years following the war, the Austrian Federal Railways made a push for modernization, focusing on electrifying the most important railway lines in the country. This allowed for faster travel speeds and led to the introduction of the six-axle electric locomotive series 1010 in the mid-1950s.
Based on this design, a series of locomotives with increased power output and a slightly lower maximum speed was developed for use on the mountain lines of the Tauern, Brenner, and Arlberg railway. These locomotives were incorporated into the ÖBB fleet as the 1110 class.
