The Class E 94 electric locomotive was delivered by Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft (AEG) in Berlin-Hennigsdorf to the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRG), the railway company of the German Democratic Republic at the time, for use on heavy freight services over the Brenner Pass. The procurement of the new E 94 class locomotives was made possible only by their classification as a critical investment for the war effort. A total of 285 heavy six-axle locomotives were ordered, but only 145 were delivered by the end of the war. The E 94 was approved for a maximum speed of 90 km/h, with an hourly output of 3,240 kW and a starting power of 3900 kW.
