For continuous electric operation on the Dresden-Prague line, the Czechoslovakian State Railways (ČSD) procured a total of 35 multi-system locomotives in collaboration with the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DDR). These locomotives were designed to operate on both the 3 kV DC network of Czechoslovakia (CSSR) and the 15 kV AC network of the GDR. After testing a prototype, fourteen series units were put into service in 1991 and stationed at the locomotive depot in Decin.
When the freight division ČD Cargo was founded in 2007, nine of these locomotives were assigned to the new company. As the only ČD Cargo locomotives capable of operating on the German railway network until 2016, all of them were gradually modernised and repainted in the company's new colours.
Primarily used for transporting trains at the Decin/Bad Schandau border crossing (and continuing to Dresden and Leipzig), they are occasionally employed for domestic transport and also reach border stations in Poland.
