Diesel locomotive 218 497-6 belongs to the legendary V 160 family of diesel locomotives and was built in 1979 by MaK in Kiel. For decades, locomotives of this class were a staple of passenger and freight services on non-electrified main lines throughout Germany.
After extensive service, including in high-quality long-distance passenger services, 218 497-6 underwent a comprehensive overhaul in 2021 at the Cottbus works of DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung GmbH (FZI).
As part of this overhaul, the locomotive received a particularly striking design: one side features a black-and-red colour scheme as a tribute to the tradition of steam locomotives. The other side is painted in the modern ICE design - white with a red decorative stripe - symbolising the Cottbus works' current role as a modern maintenance centre for high-speed trains.
