Description
100 Years of FD Express Trains
The "Pants Crease" or quite prosaically the E 10.3: There is hardly a German locomotive type that left its mark on the heyday of the German Federal Railroad starting in the Sixties as the elegant and streamlined units of the class E 10.3. Their impressive success story began in the Fifties when the new German Federal Railroad pushed ahead with electrification and ordered a powerful and swift electric locomotive type in large numbers with the E 10. The first production series (E 10.0 and E 10.1) still had a mundane, rectangular locomotive body. In 1962 the first units appeared with an "aerodynamic" end. This striking design with the "crease" in the middle soon gave this variation classed as the E 10.3 the name "Pants Crease". For decades the E 10 was the work horse in high quality passenger service on the DB, and the "Crease" was definitely among the stars on German rails. Starting in 1990 the E 10 wandered into regional service and also performed reliably its duties there. The last "Pants Creases" did not leave scheduled service on the DB until 2013 with many million kilometers under their belts.
Prototype: German Federal Railroad (DB) standard design electric locomotive, road number 110 318-3. Nicknamed "Bügelfalte" / "Pants Crease". Cobalt blue basic paint scheme. Version with double lamps, plastic rain gutters above the end windows, and cab doors, "continuous" ventilation band consisting of 7 "Klatte Ventilation Grills long", and end grab irons. Without skirting and without buffer cladding. The locomotive looks as it did around 1983.Use: Freight and passenger trains in commuter and long-distance service.
Highlights
- New tooling.
- Body constructed of die-cast zinc.
- Digital sound with many functions.
Model: The locomotive is new tooling. It has a body and frame constructed of die-cast zinc. It also has a built-in digital decoder and a sound generator for operation with mfx and DCC. The locomotive motor has a flywheel. 4 axles powered. Traction tires. Warm white LEDs are used for the headlights. They and the marker lights change over with the direction of travel and can be controlled digitally. The locomotive has cab lighting that can be controlled digitally. There is a close coupler mechanism. The locomotive has separately applied grab irons. Length over the buffers 103 mm / 4-1/16".
