In order to fulfil the rapid delivery of new locomotives for freight transport on the Tauern railway as required by ÖBB, four locomotives were diverted from a series of Swedish type Rc 2 locomotives currently under construction. The locomotives equipped with thyristor technology proved a success and a total of ten machines were delivered by 1974. Hardly any other ÖBB class had such a wide variety of lettering variants during its time in service.
The 1043 002, one of the locomotives in the "ÖBB Jaffa" design, was in service in the 1990s with an umber grey roof, frame and chassis. The upper decorative stripe was placed above the front windows. The locomotive signs had been removed and the locomotive numbers were adhered to the frame.
