DB put over 100 of these electric locomotives into service for heavy freight transport starting in 1973. In the development of class 151, some of the proven designs from classes 110, 140, 150 and 103 were used. Three removable bonnets between the driver's cabs facilitate the installation and removal of larger pieces of equipment. With a maximum speed of 120 km/h and an output of 5982 kW, the 151 was one of the DB's most powerful freight locomotives. The prototype was also regularly used in Austria.
