The railway company of the German Democratic Republic designated four-axle mainline diesel locomotives for medium service as class V 100(from 1970: class 110). In contrast to the original class 110, class 108 locomotives had a reversing gearbox and a consumption-optimised engine with reduced power. In line with its new use as a shunting locomotive, the boiler was no longer needed and additional radiator groups and a preheating unit were installed in its place.
