Adtranz (later known as Stadler Rail) developed four-axle regional railcars with diesel engines for use on branch lines. These were sold under the name "Regio Shuttle" or "RS1" for short. This vehicle concept proved particularly popular with private railways. By 2013, almost 500 Regio Shuttles had been produced. The RS1 locomotives are able to achieve a top speed of 120 km/h and, depending on the respective version, provide up to 101 seats and standing room for 94 people.
