On 24 January 1905, electric operation began on the 23.7 km long railway line into the Ammer valley. It was the first operation of an electric train under a simple AC overhead line. This made it the first line to be equipped with a new system, the "traction current" still in use in Central and Northern Europe today.
The line was initially served by electric railcars, and later by small electric locomotives which could reach speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour. The energy, in the form of single-phase alternating current, came from the Kammerl hydroelectric power station on the Ammer. From 1930 onwards, the brawny LAG 5 - later redesignated the 169 005 - reinforced the electric locomotive fleet on the Oberammergau railway. In spite of its short length of 8.7 m, this little powerhouse was able to prove its worth.
Over the decades, the railway became highly popular with all railway enthusiasts due to the level of comfort and idyllic surroundings of the Bavarian local railway. The era of the "Neinasechzga" in local transport on the Oberammergau railway came to an end in May 1981. On withdrawal of the old locomotives, a regular service was introduced and the charm of an incomparable era irretrievably disappeared.
