The decline in traffic on the railway company of the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Reichsbahn) caused many locomotives to be put out of service. Of these, the previously-essential class 118 locomotives were most affected. In the years before, the increasing electrification of the DR had also caused a decline in the number of 118s in service. However, some V 180 locomotives, renamed as the class 228 on 1st January 1992, were operated on the steep lines in Thuringia for a prolonged period of time. A few class 228.6-8 locomotives were still maintained by DB AG until 1998.
