In May and June of 1978, the American Rail Box Car Company (Railbox) sought a unique design of 70-ton Plate C boxcars from FMC.  These cars had a 6' plug door in addition to the regular 10' Youngstown slider.  These "Combo Door" ABOX boxcars have since become one of the recognizable boxcars from the late 1970s to the present.

Through October 1984 to July 1985, the Canadian National acquired hundreds of the original ABOX FMC 5277 “Combo Door” boxcars.  Some cars were completely repainted Tuscan Red by CN's Moncton, N.B. shops.  Others bore the original ABOX paint scheme with re-stenciled reporting marks for the Canadian National (CNA).

Over the years many of these boxcars needed a little love and attention due to wear and tear.  It has become common to see these cars today with miss-matched doors and many patches.  Another feature that is a first in the hobby is we are offering two road number specific ABOX’s with painted on roof sealant.

ExactRail is pleased to offer the FMC 5277 “Combo Door” boxcar with all-new road numbers.  Accurately rendered, ExactRail goes the distance by offering two versions of Stanray X-panel non-overhanging roofs (an 11 panel and 9 panel) to match the different roofs of the prototypes.
