In August 2005, Cisalpino, a joint venture between the SBB and Trenitalia, rented some class 484 locomotives. They were used for cross-border EuroCity traffic between Berne, Geneva and Milan. This meant that a locomotive change was no longer necessary at the border, which shortened the transition and therefore the total travel duration.
These locomotives featured a striking design in silver, red and light blue. In this way, the class 484 was used to haul passenger trains for the first time. Due to delivery delays on new multiple units, Cisalpino continued operation of the six locomotives until the end of 2007.
