From 1971, the German Federal Railway put 398 class 218 series locomotives into service and used them to pull both passenger and freight trains. They are usually operated on non-electrified lines. The locomotives are currently still in service at the Ulm, Kempten and Mühldorf am Inn locations, and are regularly swapped between these points.
