As a result, Bombardier was commissioned to develop a special version of the Class 145 for local services, which was classified as Class 146. The main differences compared with the Class 145 are the hollow-shaft drive approved for speeds of up to 160 km\/h, instead of the nose-suspended drive, and the highly visible destination display. A total of 31 locomotives were delivered to DB Regio between 2001 and 2002.
