The locomotives, featuring the so-called ‘nez cassé' (broken nose), were designed by the Frenchman Paul Arzens, who was responsible for the design of several SNCF locomotives at the time. Between 1976 and 1986, Alstom built 205 locomotives altogether in six production series.
