Put into service in the 1950s, it provided train services for both passenger and freight traffic for Statens Järnvägar (SJ) and remained in active service until the 1990s. Its sturdy design, versatility and durability made it one of Sweden's best-known locomotive types alongside the famous Dm and Dm 3 models.The locomotives were designed for the Swedish single-phase alternating current system (15 kV, 16 2⁄3 Hz) and reached a maximum speed of 100 km\/h.
