Before series production could begin, a number of design changes were required and were tested in a further small series of five locomotives. Between 1962 and 1964, the first series of 163 locomotives was delivered to the DR by LKM Babelsberg. Whilst the first main series was still under construction, a rain canopy was fitted above the side windows. The front ends of the locomotive hoods were also slightly modified.
