Originally developed for heavy shunting and transfer duties, these locomotives were procured by the Deutsche Bundesbahn from the 1960s onwards. The subsequent fitting of numerous locomotives with radio remote control and other shunting equipment gave rise, amongst others, to the 294, 295 and 296 classes.\u003cbr\u003eAt DB AG, the locomotives were given their characteristic traffic-red livery.
