The new B'B'-configured Class V 180 derived its designation from its powerplant: two motors, each delivering 900 hp. The locomotives had a centrally mounted boiler for universal use, including in front of passenger trains. The maximum speed was 120 km\/h, which was sufficient on the GDR's main lines; only very few lines were designed for higher speeds.
