The class was based on the tried-and-tested five-axle coupled freight locomotives of the G 12 type. Between 1958 and 1962, the Deutsche Reichsbahn had a total of 56 locomotives extensively modernised at the Zwickau repair works. Among other things, they were fitted with a more powerful reconstruction boiler and given a significantly altered appearance.\u003cbr\u003e58 3005 was initially based at Dresden-Friedrichstadt, among other places, before being transferred to the Glauchau depot in 1970.
