The VT 95 was fitted with an underfloor-mounted diesel engine and mechanical power transmission, reaching a top speed of 90 km\/h. It usually operated in conjunction with a matching trailer. Its simple, robust design and low running costs made it the \"saviour of the branch lines\".\u003cbr\u003eFollowing the introduction of the computerised numbering system, the VT 95 was given the new class designation 795 in 1968, whilst the trailers were designated 995.
