They had a maximum speed of 120 km\/h and a continuous power output of 2,310 kW. As the only class in the standardised locomotive programme, they were fitted with a tap changer on the low-voltage side of the transformer. The tap changer produced a characteristic sound, which, together with the large jumps in tractive effort, led to the nickname \"Knallfrosch\" (\"Firecracker\").
