It formed part of the second production series of the versatile Class 218, which was used for both passenger and freight services. A defining feature was the combination of a powerful diesel engine, hydrodynamic power transmission and electric train heating.\u003cbr\u003eA distinctive feature of the 218 189-9 was its colour scheme: whilst numerous Class 218 locomotives were gradually repainted in the new ocean blue\/beige scheme from the mid-1970s onwards, the 218 189-9 initially retained its classic crimson livery.
