Originally built for the Western Pacific, these locomotives were sold to Gateway Western in the early 1990s and joined the KCS roster later in that decade. After the GWWR was merged into the KCS system they were repainted into KCS’s grey scheme. Later, 3152 was sold to National Railway Equipment and remains on their roster today. All new from the ground up, these diesels feature roadnumber specific detailing such as either standard or extended range dynamic brakes, plated nose headlight, ditch lights on both ends and our new Cannon designed roof fans. Don’t forget, the order deadline for the KCS GP40 is also November 15th so get your orders in today! Rapido is proud to announce the EMD GP40 locomotive! The GP40 series was considered the gold standard of four-axle locomotives, with over 1,000 examples built for 30 different railroads in North America. EMD began production in late 1965 with an order for the New York Central. The final locomotive in the series would roll off of the line in 1971 for the Chesapeake & Ohio, number 3794. In between that time period, the Penn Central would amass the largest fleet with the Baltimore & Ohio coming in at a close second. After 1971, production would continue on with the successor: the GP40-2. Our first run will bring you many never-produced-in-plastic variations, such as: nose and Gyra/Mars lights, stepwell variations, Canadian versions and slugs. The Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad converted a heavily-damaged GP40 into a unique one-of-a-kind road slug, number 501. We will be producing 501 in both MKT and Union Pacific - complete with a working motor. Every DCC/Sound locomotive comes with the Mo-Power capacitor, which will end most interruptions to track power. A win for all! Many Class 1, regional, and foreign railroads purchased the AC4400CWs. Ownership spanned the North American Continent and with their long lives, have seen numerous paint scheme variations and ownership changes through the years. The AC4400CW went through many changes during its production. Some are easily noticeable; early units being delivered with GE’s Hi-Adhesion Trucks, while later units that had the option for newly developed GE Steerable Truck. Other details are smaller and takes a careful eye to see such as the addition of a door stop, how the step wells are reinforced, or the number and positioning of panels and doors.

Athearn has captured all these details thorough research and precision tooling to reproduce dozens of variations. Called SD32ECOs by EMD, the program replaced the existing 710G3A V16 prime mover with an EPA Tier-II-compliant 710G3B-T2 turbocharged V12, with electronic fuel injection. The Union Pacific SD60M car body retained many of its major components and subassemblies, having them recycled and recertified as equal to new. EMD also installed a completely new control system which is adaptable to both minimum emissions and minimum fuel consumption modes, depending upon the specific locomotives assignment. Classified as an SD59M-2 by the Union Pacific Railroad, unit numbers 9900-9927 are currently at work on the system.

Product Specs

Axles - 6
DCC - Ready/21-Pin NEM
Era - 2010-Present Day
Lighting - LED
Prototype Manufacturer - EMD
Reporting Mark - UP
Scale - HO
Sound - Ready
Sub Brand - GENESIS

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/athearn-genesis-athg80163-ho-g2-0-sd59m-2-up-9908-dcc-ready-weathered-by-weather-my-trains-locomotives-796.jpg?v=1782949265
scaletrains-sxt41232-rivet-counter-ho-scale-emd-sd38-2-burlington-northern-white-face-beacon-6260-dcc-sound-equipped-weathered-by-weather-my-trains
ScaleTrains SXT41232 Rivet Counter HO Scale EMD SD38-2, Burlington Northern/White Face/Beacon 6260 DCC & Sound Equipped - Weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS

This item is a factory new product that has been professionally weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS.

Built by EMD from November of 1972 through June of 1979, the SD38-2 was essentially the six-axle version of the smaller GP38-2 that featured numerous electronic upgrades. to give its product catalog a refresh, introducing what it dubbed the “Dash 2” line. Based upon customer feedback, EMD retained the basics of the previous 1966-Line, adding various improvements aimed at increasing reliability and performance. The Flexicoil-C truck used under the 1966-Line, its original iteration dating back to the SD7 of 1951, was replaced by a new truck design, called the HT-C, which offered greater adhesion, and was slightly longer than the Flexicoil-C. The frames of the six-axle Dash 2 units were lengthened slightly to accommodate the new truck design, and internally, all sported a new main electrical control cabinet featuring modular, solid-state components in the form of “cards” controlling various locomotive functions that could be pulled and replaced as needed, greatly simplifying the troubleshooting and repair process. The new models received a “-2” suffix, with the SD38 of 1966 being revised into the SD38-2.

Much like its SD38 predecessor, the SD38-2 was envisioned as a medium horsepower, high tractive effort machine, designed to haul heavy tonnage at relatively lower speeds. In contrast to its SD40-2 and SD45-2 brethren, which were optimized for hauling tonnage at higher speeds across all types of operating profiles, the SD38-2 was more at home lugging heavy commodity trains at low speed, or shuffling long cuts of cars in yards. While it wasn’t the ideal choice for blasting high-priority TOFC trains across the country, it would be right at home dragging a heavy iron-ore train up a 2% grade. Powered by the same basic 16-645 prime mover that drove the SD40-2, the SD38-2 lacked turbocharging, which kept its horsepower (HP) at 2,000, as opposed to the 3,000 of the 40-series.

The lower HP rating suited its intended duty just fine however, and the lack of a turbocharger simplified maintenance and reduced overall costs. Externally, the SD38-2 was very similar to the SD40-2, with the primary spotting features being a pair of radiator fans instead of the trio used on the SD40-2 (1,000 fewer HP didn’t require as much cooling), and it had a pair of small, oval stacks coming from its prime mover’s exhaust manifold instead of the single large rectangular stack coming from the turbocharger on the SD40-2. Lastly, the SD38-2 featured a large boxy housing on its roofline, just behind the inertial air filtration compartment, that housed groups of filter elements for engine combustion air.

While the overall number of SD38-2s built was but a tiny fraction of what EMD produced for the wildly popular SD40-2, the SD38-2 was sold to a wide variety of owners, representing most of the major carriers of the time during its production run from 1972 to 1979. Its performance characteristics were reflected in the roads that ordered them; Bessemer & Lake Erie and Elgin, Joliet & Eastern were tied for the most by an original owner, and utilized them in the heavy terminal switching and drag freight service those roads handled. At the other end of the service spectrum were roads like Chicago & North Western and Southern Pacific, which ordered SD38-2s for heavy yard switching and hump duty, already having plenty of higher-HP units on their rosters, like SD40-2s, for handling higher-speed road applications.

While not as prolific as other models in the catalog at the time, the SD38-2 served an important role for the roads that ordered them, and have had long careers, with many going on to new owners and paint schemes through sales and mergers. This new model from ScaleTrains is a logical addition to the product line, being an extension of the SD40-2 project, similar to how the prototype SD38-2 and SD40-2 were part of the same product line. Inside you’ll find the same smooth, proven mechanism as used in the SD40-2, and HT-C truck gearbox with “clasp” brake shoes, or standard brake shoes, per prototype. Square or angled paper air filter boxes are present, as are different dynamic brake and exhaust stack options. It also features all of the road-specific detailing you’ve come to expect on ScaleTrains models, down to the unique extended walkway ducts and raised rear walkway and slug electrical connections found on the SP units. These new units would be right at home on just about any layout, handling heavy switching and drag road duty, just like their 1:1 counterparts.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/scaletrains-sxt41232-rivet-counter-ho-scale-emd-sd38-2-burlington-northern-white-face-beacon-6260-dcc-sound-equipped-weathered-by-weather-my-trains-locomotives-171.jpg?v=1782949385
atlas-n-40004923-emd-gp60-loksound-and-dcc-mastertm-gold-union-pacific-2063-weathered-by-weather-my-trains
Atlas N 40004923 EMD GP60 - LokSound and DCC - Master(TM) Gold - Union Pacific 2063 - Weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS

This item is a factory new product that has been professionally weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS.

This detailed Atlas Master Gold N Scale EMD GP60 locomotive is based on the popular road unit used by a number of railroads. The first two models were the ES44DC and ES44AC. The ES44C4 followed a few years later.

The new models were designed to meet the stricter diesel locomotive emissions standards imposed by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. The EPA “Tier” emissions standards are a series, or Tiers, of allowable emissions levels based upon a locomotive’s date of manufacture. In 2005, Tier 2 took effect followed by Tier 3 in 2010 and Tier 4 took in 2015.

GE developed a new diesel engine, the 12-cylinder GEVO 12, to meet the new emission standards. Both the bore and stroke were increased to produce the same 4,400 horsepower as the older 7FDL16 16-cylinder engine.

The new prime mover drives an alternator-producing AC current that is rectified to DC. On the ES44DC, this powers the traction motors. On the ES44AC and ES44C4, the DC is “chopped” back into AC to power the traction motors. The two models share a common 73’ 2” frame and external appearance.

The external appearance is similar to the AC4400CW. The cab on early ES44s is almost identical. In 2009, GE changed the cab and nose, moving the nose door from the left side to the right side and replacing the curved seams with more square seams.

Unlike their predecessors, both the AC and DC versions of the ES44 have a large box behind the cab. The biggest visual difference is the larger “wing” structure over the radiator cab. The thicker radiators and related equipment in the radiator cab work to cool the exhaust, which reduces emissions.

Customer options and design changes have resulted in seven different dynamic brake configurations. The grilles on the sides of the radiator cab have also gone through seven configurations. The most recent units have changed the latches on the engine cab doors to match the ET44 units.

Although EPA Tier 4 standards went into effect in 2015, the ES44 series continues to be built. This is due to the Tier 4 Credits, a complicated system that allows GE to continue to build and various railroads to buy the ES44 based on the number of Tier 4 units built.

After 2 testbed units and 35 pre-production units, over 7,600 additional ES44s have been built. All of the major railroads including BNSF, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and Union Pacific have fleets with 100s of units. Florida East Coast, Ferromex, Iowa Interstate, and Kansas City Southern also operate ES44s.

In addition, 131 were built as lease units for Citirail.

The ES44 has become the best-selling diesel locomotive of all time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/scaletrains-sxt41452-rivet-counter-ho-scale-ge-es44ac-kansas-city-southern-belle-as-delivered-4781-dc-dcc-ready-weathered-by-weather-my-trains-locomotives-654.jpg?v=1782948966
scaletrains-sxt41453-rivet-counter-ho-scale-ge-es44ac-kansas-city-southern-belle-as-delivered-4789-dcc-sound-equipped-weathered-by-weather-my-trains
ScaleTrains SXT41451 Rivet Counter HO Scale GE ES44AC, Kansas City Southern/Belle/As Delivered 4781 DCC & Sound Equipped - Weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS

This item is a factory new product that has been professionally weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS.

In 2002, GE introduced the “Evolution Series” of locomotives.

In addition, 131 were built as lease units for Citirail.

The ES44 has become the best-selling diesel locomotive of all time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/scaletrains-sxt41451-rivet-counter-ho-scale-ge-es44ac-kansas-city-southern-belle-as-delivered-4781-dcc-sound-equipped-weathered-by-weather-my-trains-605.jpg?v=1782948967
scaletrains-sxt41585-rivet-counter-ho-scale-ge-dash-9-44cw-union-pacific-winged-nose-logo-red-sill-stripe-9748-dcc-sound-equipped-weathered-by-weather-my-trains
ScaleTrains SXT41585 Rivet Counter HO Scale GE DASH 9-44CW, Union Pacific/Winged Nose Logo/Red Sill Stripe 9748 DCC & Sound Equipped - Weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS

This item is a factory new product that has been professionally weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS.

The GE DASH 9 Series debuted in 1993 with numerous electronic upgrades, building on the DASH 8 platform. GE once again positioned itself to shake up the locomotive world again less than a decade later. Entering the 1990s, GE completely revamped its locomotive lineup by utilizing customer feedback, learning from experience gained from previous locomotive series, and improvements in technology.

A single C44-9W demonstrator, number 8601, debuted in 1993 (and later became C&NW 8601). While similar at first glance to predecessor models like the C40-8 and C40-8W, the Dash-9 series featured a few notable physical differences. Built on a slightly longer platform that allowed for a massive 5,000-gallon fuel tank, Dash-9s also featured thicker radiator “wings” at the rear of the carbody. This is usually the quickest way to differentiate them from previous models.

The GE DASH 9 series includes several models, including the C40-9, C44-9W, and C44-9WL. These models differ in power output, traction motor types, and other features, but share a common design and architecture. The DASH 9 series is characterized by its distinctive nose shape, angular lines, and robust construction.

One of the key features of the DASH 9 series is its high-power diesel engine, which produces up to 4,400 horsepower. This makes it one of the most powerful single-engine locomotives in the world. The engine is paired with a state-of-the-art traction control system, which optimizes power delivery and reduces wheel slip. This results in improved acceleration, braking, and overall performance.

The DASH 9 series also features advanced digital control systems, including a microprocessor-based control unit and a sophisticated monitoring system. This allows for real-time monitoring of the locomotive's performance, fault detection, and automatic control of various systems.

In terms of design, the DASH 9 series has a distinctive appearance, with a sloping nose, angular lines, and a robust construction. The locomotive's body is made of steel, with a durable paint finish and a range of optional liveries. The cab is designed for comfort and ergonomics, with a modern control stand, adjustable seats, and ample visibility.

The GE DASH 9 series has been widely adopted by freight railroads in North America and globally. Its high power, efficiency, and reliability make it an ideal choice for heavy-haul freight operations, particularly in mountainous terrain. Many railroads have also praised the DASH 9 series for its ease of maintenance, reduced downtime, and lower operating costs.

The DASH 9 series remained in production until the early 2000s when it was superseded by GE’s “Evolution Series” ES40/44-series models. Age has begun to catch up with the earliest C44-9W and related models so some railroads are storing and/or rebuilding these veteran units. NS’s oldest units, the spartan-cab C40-9s, have been rebuilt with the latest GE safety cab for increased crew comfort and safety plus AC traction for better performance.

In conclusion, the GE DASH 9 series has earned a reputation as one of the most reliable and efficient locomotives in the world. Built over a long timeframe, and proving to be a solid, upgradeable platform, the C44-9W family of locomotives including rebuilds is sure to remain a fixture on today’s railroads for the foreseeable future.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/scaletrains-sxt41585-rivet-counter-ho-scale-ge-dash-9-44cw-union-pacific-winged-nose-logo-red-sill-stripe-9748-dcc-sound-equipped-weathered-by-weather-my-792.jpg?v=1782949209
rapido-040506-ho-emd-gp40-dc-dcc-sound-cn-stripes-4016-weathered-by-weather-my-trains
Rapido 040506 HO EMD GP40 (DC/DCC/Sound): CN - Stripes: #4016 - Weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS

This item is a factory new product that has been professionally weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS. * Medium Weathering*

Specifications

Manufacturer

RAPIDO

Control

DCC/Sound

SCALE

HO Scale

Railroad

Canadian National

Paint Scheme

CN Stripes

HO Scale GP40 Locomotive Just in time for the upcoming GP40 November 15th order deadline, we’re excited to announce a new road name, Kansas City Southern!

In addition, 131 were built as lease units for Citirail.

The ES44 has become the best-selling diesel locomotive of all time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/scaletrains-sxt39921-rivet-counter-ho-scale-es44ac-canadian-national-ex-citirail-patched-2756-dcc-sound-equipped-weathered-by-weather-my-trains-locomotives-673.jpg?v=1783029966
walthers-ho-20229-ge-es44ac-evolution-series-gevo-esu-sound-dcc-canadian-pacific-kansas-city-ltd-kcs-4805-weathered-by-weather-my-trains
Walthers HO 20229 GE ES44AC Evolution Series GEVO - ESU Sound & DCC - Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. The 4,000hp Dash 8-40CW was produced by General Electric between 1989 and 1993 as a follow-up to the successful Dash 8-40C locomotive. The most distinguishing feature of this model was the introduction of GE's version of the wide-nose North American Safety Cab. This style of cab would become a common sight on railroads across the country. Four major railroads purchased the Dash 8-40CW in fairly large quantities, including Conrail, CSX, Santa Fe and Union Pacific. Many of these units are still in regular mainline and heavy-haul freight service and others have gone on to secondary owners or into rebuild programs. This detailed model features a five-pole, skew-wound motor with dual flywheels, directional LED lighting, working front and/or rear ditch lights as appropriate, Accumate(R) magnetic knuckle couplers, accurate decoration and other roadname-appropriate body details. This replica comes equipped with a dual-mode ESU LokSound sound and DCC decoder for operation on DCC and DC layouts (with limited sound capabilities on in DC operation). The GE Dash 8-40CW is one of many Atlas HO Scale locomotives.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/atlas-ho-10004499-ge-dash-8-40cw-loksound-and-dcc-master-r-gold-canadian-national-ic-2466-weathered-by-weather-my-trains-locomotives-287.jpg?v=1788555126
intermountain-497110s-ho-tier-4-locomotive-cn-heritage-bc-rail-esu-dcc-sound-3115-weathered-by-weather-my-trains
Intermountain 497110S HO Tier 4 Locomotive - CN Heritage BC Rail - ESU DCC/Sound #3115 - Weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS

This item is a factory new product that has been professionally weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS - Heavy Weathering. Comes equipped with a complete ESU Digital Sound Decoder built in.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/intermountain-497110s-ho-tier-4-locomotive-cn-heritage-bc-rail-esu-dcc-sound-3115-weathered-by-weather-my-trains-locomotives-954.jpg?v=1788558787
piko-97819-ho-d-rgw-4003-ml4000-modified-diesel-hydraulic-locomotive-dcc-sound-weathered-by-weather-my-trains
Piko 97819 HO D&RGW #4003 ML4000 Modified Diesel-Hydraulic Locomotive, DCC/Sound - Weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS

This item is a factory new product that has been professionally weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS. * Medium Weathering*

Features:

RP25 wheels

Silky-smooth & powerful PIKO Mechanism for great low-speeds and precise running

Period-specific details

PIKO knuckle couplers

Factory-installed with a PIKO XP 5.1 SmartSound Decoder

A Little About The Prototype...

Krauss-Maffei of Germany worked closely with the Southern Pacific and the Denver & Rio Grande to develop a revolutionary new diesel-hydraulic locomotive. At the start of the 1960s, these beasts packed 4000 horsepower, a feat that would not be matched by American Diesel locomotive builders for many years. Typical American diesels of the time had only 2000 HP or less. The idea of replacing two locos with one in mainline service had great appeal. The hydraulic transmissions were an effort to eliminate the complexity and maintenance issues of electrical traction motors and all their related controls.

Three “Prototype” locos were delivered to SP in 1961 and three to D&RGW. These cab locos with their rounded noses and full carbodies looked very different than the slightly larger batch of “Series” hood locos later delivered to the SP. Upon delivery, both roads promptly put their KMs to work in the hardest possible service, with dynamometer cars often following to test every aspect. Performance was impressive, but teething problems quickly developed. German technicians sent over to the SP and D&RGW worked to address issues and train local maintenance crews. Over time, many modifications were made and reliability improved, but in the end, the locos may simply have been victims of a difference of cultures. Technology that was commonplace and successful in European railroads just did not mesh well with American railroad operation and maintenance practices. None of the six “Prototype” locos survived the decade, but they made an indelible mark with many thousands of fans.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/piko-97819-ho-d-rgw-4003-ml4000-modified-diesel-hydraulic-locomotive-dcc-sound-weathered-by-weather-my-trains-locomotives-228.jpg?v=1788560586
scaletrains-sxt42088-rivet-counter-ho-scale-ge-es44ac-canadian-national-2912-dcc-sound-equipped-weathered-by-weather-my-trains
ScaleTrains SXT42088 Rivet Counter HO Scale GE ES44AC, Canadian National 2912 DCC & Sound Equipped - Weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS

This item is a factory new product that has been professionally weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS. * Medium Weathering*

In 2002, GE introduced the “Evolution Series” of locomotives.

In addition, 131 were built as lease units for Citirail.

The ES44 has become the best-selling diesel locomotive of all time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/scaletrains-sxt42088-rivet-counter-ho-scale-ge-es44ac-canadian-national-2912-dcc-sound-equipped-weathered-by-weather-my-trains-locomotives-986.jpg?v=1788560827
broadway-limited-imports-n-9963-emd-sd70ace-sound-and-dcc-paragon4tm-canadian-national-8102-weathered-by-weather-my-trains
Broadway Limited Imports N 9963 EMD SD70ACe - Sound and DCC - Paragon4(TM) - Canadian National #8102 - Weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS

This item is a factory new product that has been professionally weathered by WEATHER MY TRAINS. * Heavy Weathering*

The N Scale Broadway Limited EMD SD70ACe is patterned after one of the most popular EMD diesels of the 2000s.
