The 85ft long vehicles, which were powered by a pair of Detroit Diesel Series 110 engines, could be employed in single formation or coupled together with other examples - all controlled from the lead RDC cab. In the United States, the Boston & Maine was the principal user of these single-car units, but they were also an important part of the rural lines and short-haul commuter passenger fleet of other railroad companies, including the Santa Fe, B&O, New Haven, NP, NYC, Reading, SP, and many others. Many later went on to Amtrak and various commuter agencies such as the Metro- North among others. RDCs can still be found in small numbers on scenic lines in both countries, as well as some rare regular services. In Canada, CN and CP rostered large numbers of RDCs, which later passed to VIA. The RDC served branchlines from coast to coast, and were a means of reducing the costs of unprofitable local runs. They were also ubiquitous on the mainline, often in multiple units of three, six or even 11 cars! CN’s RDCs could be found across the country in early years and mainly in the Toronto area in later years. Eager to cut costs, CP used the RDCs everywhere, especially in commuter service, the Maritimes, and Vancouver Island. In VIA years, the RDC formed the backbone of shorter services in Quebec, the Toronto area and the Maritimes, as well as in Alberta and BC. PGE and later BCR used a fair number of RDCs in British Columbia right up until 2002. The Rapido N scale RDC is designed from the ground up based on the success of our HO scale version, as well as feedback from the N scale community on what they look for in a model. These units feature a hidden drive system and great interior detailing, allowing for maximum performance and realism. For the inaugural release, the all-coach RDC-1 will be available in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 body styles (as appropriate). A must for modellers, transit enthusiasts, tourists, history buffs, and everyone who thinks subways are cool — don’t miss out on this limited opportunity to own a little bit of classic Toronto in your home! You can order your subway as a working model or as an unpowered display two-car set that comes with a slice of the original St. Clair station platform. How nifty is that? It all started in 1951, when the Toronto Transit Commission contracted the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company in the UK to build the cars for Canada’s first subway. The original line ran under Yonge Street from Union Station in the south to Eglinton Avenue in the north, opening on March 30th, 1954. This line is still in service today as the southern half of TTC’s Line 1. These unique rapid transit cars featured bold red paint with yellow stripes both above and below the large picture windows. Most M420 quired a different bolster design and a slightly different truck spacing, making them unique. MLW constructed 103 M420s between May 1973 and February 1977 for four railways including CN (80), BCR (16 including eight B units), Ferrocarriles del Estado (2), Providence & Worcester (5). CN would take delivery of the M420s in 3 groups: MR-20a class 2500-2529 (delivered 1973), MR-20b class 2530- 2559 (delivered 1974), and MR-20c class 2560-2579 (delivered 1976). All of the CN units were retired by 1998 and today many of these locomotives have found second careers on short lines all over North America. After testing their initial prototype steel van in 1964, CN placed an order for 150 copies from Hawker Siddeley, which were specifically designed for them. The body shells were constructed in Trenton, Nova Scotia, while the final assembly was completed at Hawker Siddeley’s previous Fort William, Ontario plant (now Thunder Bay). The H-S Vans were numbered 79200 to 79349 and delivered in 1967. They were favorites amongst crews on the CN. They featured creature comforts such as: Waugh full-cushion underframes, electric lighting and power via an axle-driven generator, roller bearing trucks, a pair of oil stoves, a refrigerator, hot plate and much more. Their styling and design would set the standard for future Van orders. Few changes were made to these cars over their 30-year service lives with CN. The most notable changes were the paint schemes and some were modified for international service which features like; FRA compliant window glass with orange side sills and end striping to denote that service. At the height of the Korean War, the US Army required a new fleet of rolling stock to transport military hardware across the nation on any railroad. Notably, a large order for 650 cars was placed with the Magor Car Corporation to handle the heavier and larger tanks and other military equipment of the era. Delivered between April and July 1953, the Magor fleet came in at 54’ and weighed in at around 36 tons with a 100-ton load carrying capacity. Features included a wood deck and heavy steel frame construction along with 6-wheel buckeye trucks. The DODX Flatcars quickly proved invaluable in service and would go on to enjoy very long careers on the rails. Delivered with the USAX reporting marks and numbered 38016-38665, these cars would find work transporting all sorts of equipment including the latest tanks, APCs, navy gun turrets and even locomotives such as the Army’s own GE 80 tonners. Over time there were several changes to the Magor fleet. Starting around 1961, the fleet began receiving new DODX reporting marks, though this was a long conversion and there were USAX lettered cars in service as late as 1974. Also, in the mid-60s many would begin conversion to roller bearings in the 6-wheel Buckeye trucks. In addition, several cars in the fleet were also assigned to the Navy and painted silver to signify this assignment. After higher capacity equipment entered service in the 1980s, these burly cars were largely withdrawn from service around 1990 with the last of the fleet being decommissioned at the end of the Gulf War in 1991. Due to their sturdy construction, many have been preserved in museums and continue to run today! The C36-7 was General Electric’s higher-horsepower six-axle Dash-7 offering, with a 16-cylinder 3,600 horsepower or 3,750 hp rating (compared to the C30-7's 3,000 hp.) Built between July 1979 and February 1989, over 599 total units were produced. Of those, 129 were domestic orders for Conrail, Missouri Pacific, Norfolk & Western, and Norfolk Southern. Another 40 were made for Ferrocarril del Pacifico and National de Mexico. Lastly, 422 were made for China with many significant export differences, and the final units produced were 8 for Comilog in Gabon. Despite smaller production numbers, the C36-7 was ordered at key moments that resulted in it representing the evolution of GE’s Dash-7 line more than the popular C30-7's. When GE launched “1977 Series Locomotives” (Dash-7's) in, they cataloged a C30-7, C33-7, and C36-7. Railroads immediately ordered C30-7's for booming coal service. The C33-7 was never ordered. The C36-7 was ignored until 1979, when National de Mexico and Ferrocarril del Pacifico placed orders. These export C36-7's for Mexico were essentially identical externally to C30-7's, which were being built by the hundreds at the time. Ferrocarril del Pacifico’s units were repainted into striking two-tone blue FNM paint and worked both freight and passenger service. Of the 40 C36-7's built for Mexico, only one is still in service - Ferromex 9336. Incredibly, despite being the last operating C36-7 (among few remaining operating C30-7's) 9336 was repainted in Ferromex’s classy “Diet Coke” scheme in 2023. In March 1981, GE built the first domestic order of C36-7's – a small order of 6 for Norfolk and Western. N&W received 25 more C36-7's in the “Claytor” scheme a year later in 1982. All of the N&W units featured a slight late-production change in hood doors and seams behind the cab, shared with late production C30-7's. They were set up short hood forward, and their high horsepower was put to good use on N&W’s heavy trains. By that time, GE 6-axle production heavily tapered off domestically – the last domestic C30-7's ordered were produced for Santa Fe in late 1982 and early 1983; after that, all C30-7 production was for Mexico. After over a year of pause, a 12-unit C36-7 order for Norfolk Southern was produced in 1984 – and they looked very different. Hinting at future Dash-8 design, the units had a boxy raised hump for extended range dynamic braking behind the cab. Despite the boxyness, they also had a late Dash-7 feature – a totally smooth, rounded nose, with no box for the headlight. As an NS purchase, these units were set up long-hood forward, including plows and later ditch lights on the rear. Next, Conrail received 25 C36-7's in 1985 that did not feature the boxy hump but did have other late-production features like the smooth nose and hood detail differences. Additionally, they were rated at 3,750 hp. These were a common sight in consists with C30-7A's on the CR system, and were used in all manner of service, from heavy coal drags to intermodal and mixed freight. Finally, in late 1985, Missouri Pacific received the largest and most distinct order of C36-7's – 60 units numbers 9000-9059. Missouri Pacific was being merged into UP at the time of their order, so the units came in UP yellow with Missouri Pacific "North Little Rock” shop lettering. The units featured the boxy dynamic brake housing, and added a higher capacity 4,300 gallon fuel tank that filled the entire space between the trucks, and were rated at 3,750 hp. Early on, there were performance issues with the engines and in 1988 major work began to upgrade and replace the engines and other components. After six units were completed, Union Pacific, with the merger fully completed, began to reletter the units as they were outshopped. Performance improved, and the 9000-series numbers were retained. In September 1995, UP needed to clear numbers for CN&W C40-8W's, and assigned 2600-2659 as a new number series, which 27 units received. Before that was completed, the SP merger prompted another reassignment to 600-659, but renumbering proceeded slowly. Finally, in December 1999, yet another renumbering began, to the 7942-7999. Few units received it before disposition in 2001. To make matters more confusing, UP never completed any of these renumbering’s – at the end (2001), units still existed in the original 9000 series, 2600 series, and 600 series! That covers it! Except – why are there BN units in here? Because BN ultimately rostered what they called C33-7’s and C36-7’s. During 1991 BN began an upgrade process to over 40 C30-7’s, which received improved wheel slip control, additional ballasting, and increased horsepower. Units uprated to 3,300hp became “C33-7’s”, and to 3,600hp became “C36-7’s”. Externally, there was no difference, although at some point in the late 1980’s BN’s C30-7’s had a door swapped near the radiator to add an extra grille. For the upgraded units, the key difference was red numberboards to distinguish the upgrade – this applied to both cascade green units, and units that received “Whiteface” paint. To avoid confusion, this was not the same as a late 80’s test of lube oil on certain units, which also was shown by yellow or red numberboards. C36-7 Locomotive Rapido is excited to announce the follow-up to our C30-7 model, the long-awaiting GE C36-7 in HO Scale. Locomotive Rapido is excited to announce the follow-up to our C30-7 model, the long-awaiting GE C36-7 in HO Scale. Between January 1946 and October 1950 a total of 440 FA-1s and 240 FB-1s were built by ALCo and their Canadian subsidiary, Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW). They were originally sold to twenty-five railroads in the US, Canada and Mexico. The FA-1 (and booster FB-1) were rated at 1500 horsepower and was designed primarily as a freight hauler. In a market that was becoming dominated by EMD products, the FA-1 came in a distant second due in part to reliability issues with its 244 prime mover. Still, they were popular with several roads and could be found at the head of freights into the late 1960s. Founded in 1952, Products Tank Line (renamed Procor in 1962) constructed their manufacturing plant in the mid-1950s in Oakville, Ontario. Initially, engineering was supplied by the parent Union Tank Car Company. In the 1960s, Procor assembled their own engineering department and crafted a series of standard design tank cars which paved the way for a new generation of equipment, with many modern designs reflecting this new standard. The GP20 (again, the tank car and not the locomotive) was suitable for lighter density commodities which would not congeal or freeze in cold weather, such as various oils and fuel. The same car could also be equipped with interior heater coil pipes, such that the contents could be reheated. The same basic design — including tank diameter and length — was manufactured from 1969 through until 1984. The GP20 was constructed with both 70 ton and 100 ton capacity trucks. Later designs were also equipped with a separate fittings dome (in addition to the manway assembly fitting), which allowed the tank rating to be upgraded from 60 psi to 100 psi. When production of the GP20 tank car was completed in 1984, Procor had built almost 1000 cars of this design. They are in use across North America in both fleet service and lease service to numerous companies. Common reporting marks carried by these cars included UTLX (Union Tank Car), PROX (Procor), NCTX (North American Car Co.), BCOL (British Columbia Railway), and CN (Canadian National). Covered hoppers started to become a major car style just prior to WWII and are one of the dominant car types on railroads today. Early development of covered hoppers tended to center around two-bay cars, with few mass-produced cars until the 1950s. During the early development of covered hoppers, the New York Central built several different groups of “Enterprise” covered hoppers both for its own use and for its subsidiaries. The first groups were built immediately before World War II in 1939 and 1940. These cars proved quite successful, and in 1948 the NYC built another group of cars under Lot (the NYC’s classification system) number 747-H. The post-war cars were slightly larger than their predecessors with a 2000 cubic foot capacity. They utilized Standard Railway Equipment’s steel roof panels which had four offset roof hatches on each side versus the five hatches per side on the pre-war cars. An unknown number of these cars were fitted with smaller, circular hatches for flour and sugar loading. A total of 750 cars were built in Lot 747-H. They proved so successful that additional cars followed in Lots 783, 784 and 785. The later series differed in using diagonal panel roofs but were otherwise identical to the Lot 747 cars. At the same time as the New York Central was building their Lot 747-H cars, the Canadian National also built 150 cars to largely the same design. These were also delivered in 1948. Although at first glance nearly identical, the CN cars differed from the NYC’s in the design of roof panels, side panels, hatch spacing and construction details. The CN’s cars remained in service for many years, with some being later converted to ballast cars for maintenance of way use. Rapido is offering correct versions of both the New York Central Lot 747H cars and the CN’s home-built versions. The New York Central Enterprise Covered Hopper Cars would last well into Penn Central's tenure and cars would receive jade green or gray repaints. The jade green cars would be repurposed as company sand cars. The Canadian National cars remained in service for many years, with some being later converted to ballast cars for maintenance of way use. The reefers were built from January through August 1957, with a total of 1700 cars built in class R-40-27. They were placed into the PFE 10001-11700 numbering series and featured a 4-foot-wide Youngstown sliding plug-door, sliding toward the left, combined with a 2-foot-wide hinged door to the right of it. This created a 6-foot-wide opening when both were opened, or just a 2-foot-wide opening if the car needed to be inspected before unloading in order to retain the cool interior temperature. Soon the R-40-27 car’s plans were modified with a six-foot sliding plug-door, along with the established 2-foot-wide swinging door, creating the new class R-40-28 cars, of which there were 100 (PFE 11701-11800 )constructed by in July 1957. Both the R40-27 and R-40-28 class cars were cooled with ice, and included overhead electric fans to circulate the cool air enroute. As it would turn out these would be the last ice-cooled refrigerator cars built by PFE. After these classes, all PFE reefers utilized mechanical cooling. Rapido Trains is excited to announce the N Scale release of these iconic cars! SP built one prototype and six production Dome Lounge cars between 1954 and 1955. All were built new in the railroad’s Sacramento General Shops, using select frame pieces from various retired Pullman-Standard pre-war “Daylight” cars. The Budd Company supplied the dome structure as a kit. Essentially, these cars were new construction using salvaged frame pieces for accounting purposes, and because SP’s foundry couldn’t roll a long enough center sill, and no one could supply one quickly enough. Initially built for service on the San Joaquin and Shasta Daylights and the Overland, they later saw wider service. Initially built for service on the San Joaquin and Shasta Daylights and the Overland services, they later saw wider service. Originally built with corrugated side panels, the cars were modified by the SP with slab sides in the 1960s. At least four of these cars lasted into the Amtrak era. The interiors of the cars featured a bar/lounge on the lower level and comfortable lounge seating on the upper level.
