The carrier worked with General Motors Electro-Motive Division to design new passenger locomotives. The result was the SDP40F. Built by EMD from 1973–1974 for Amtrak and for a brief time they formed the backbone of Amtrak’s long-distance passenger fleet. With 150 built, the SDP40F became the “face” of Amtrak in the mid-1970s as they were found on the head ends of passenger trains from San Diego to Washington DC and from Seattle to Miami. Several were rebuilt and found a second life with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in freight service.

The design of the SDP40F was based on the EMD FP45 passenger locomotive. Both shared the EMD 645E3 diesel engine, although the SDP40F had 16 cylinders instead of 20. The space saved from the smaller prime mover was given over to increased water capacity. The SDP40F had an underbody tank split between water and diesel fuel, carrying 2,000 gallons of water and 2,500 gallons of diesel. A second 1,500 gallon water tank sat in the carbody, forward of the steam generators which produced the steam needed for supplying heat (and sometimes cooling) and hot water for the train.

Eventually, the SDP40F was phased out as all-electric cars, such as the Amfleet, displaced the old steam heat rolling stock. While the SDP40F was designed with conversion to head-end power (HEP) in mind, the bad press they received, cost to upgrade and overhaul the units, and Amtrak’s satisfaction with the versatility of the HEP-equipped F40PH ultimately doomed the SDP40F. Amtrak was able to trade in the SDP40Fs to EMD as more F40PH units were acquired in the late 1970s. The last SDP40F was retired from Amtrak in the early 1980s.

In 1984, Santa Fe Railway traded lower-power locomotives to Amtrak for 18 SDP40Fs, horsepower-for-horsepower. The SDP40Fs were reconditioned in the railroad’s San Bernardino, California shops to the designation SDF40-2 for use as freight locomotives. Santa Fe replaced the hollow HTC bolsters with conventional HTC bolsters, converted the below-frame combination fuel/water tank to an all-fuel tank, removed the above-frame water tanks (replacing these with concrete ballast) and used the engines for nearly 15 years. They were also given front steps and platforms. Their noses were notched after a second maintenance shop visit in order to improve boarding access. In exchange, Amtrak received 43 smaller locomotives for use in switching service.

Product Specs
Axles - 6
DCC - Ready/21-Pin NEM
Era - 1971-1990, 1991-2009
Lighting - LED
Prototype Manufacturer - EMD
Reporting Mark - BNSF
Scale - HO
Sound - Ready
Sub Brand - GENESIS
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/athearn-genesis-athg64126-ho-sdp40f-locomotive-bnsf-6975-locomotives-866.jpg?v=1776916391
athearn-genesis-athg64127-ho-sdp40f-locomotive-bnsf-6977
Athearn Genesis ATHG64127 HO SDP40F Locomotive, BNSF #6977

BNSF FEATURES:

Beacon (Flash function in DCC only)

Classification lights (Function in DCC only)

Number board lights

Working Truck lights

Separate see-through walkways

MU hoses

Legendary Liveries scheme

This Legendary Liveries release has an Alternate Timeline that suggests that BNSF selected two of the ex-Santa Fe SDF40-2’s for rebuilding for use on their Business Train specials.

ROAD NUMBER SPECIFIC FEATURES:
#6975

A/C

Sinclair antenna

Notched nose and modified steps

#6977

A/C

Sinclair antenna

Notched nose and modified steps

SDP40F SERIES LOCOMOTIVE FEATURES:

Illuminated ground lights

Illuminated classification lights

Illuminated number boards

Front and rear trainline hoses

Non-skid end walks

Front and rear 3-hose M.U. hose clusters with silver ends

Detailed and painted cab interior with control stand

4,500-gallon split fuel/water or rebuilt fuel only tank

HTC sideframes with high brake cylinders and air lines

Flush mounted portal window glass

Minimum radius: 18” — Recommended radius: 22”

GENESIS DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE FEATURES:

Coupler cut levers

MU hoses

Trainline hose

See-through cab windows

Full cab interior

Walkway tread

Windshield wipers

Wire grab irons

Sander lines

Lift rings

DCC-ready features Quick Plug™ plug-and-play technology with 21-pin NEM connector

Fine-scale Celcon handrails for scale appearance

Detailed fuel tank with fuel fillers, fuel gauges, breather pipes, and retention tanks

Body-mounted McHenry® operating scale knuckle couplers

Genesis driveline with 5-pole skew wound motor, precision machined flywheels, and multi-link drivetrain for trouble free operation

Eight-wheel drive with precision gears for smooth and quiet operation

All-wheel electrical pickup provides reliable current flow

Wheels with RP25 contours operate on all popular brands of track

LED Lighting for trouble free operation

Heavy die-cast frame for greater traction and more pulling power

Scaled from prototype resources including drawings, field measurements, photographs, and more

Accurately-painted and –printed paint schemes

Fully-assembled and ready-to-run

Packaging securely holds the model for safe storage

LEGENDARY LIVERIES

What are Legendary Liveries?

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/athearn-genesis-athg64127-ho-sdp40f-locomotive-bnsf-6977-locomotives-981.jpg?v=1776916394
athearn-ath70744-ho-50-superior-plug-box-bnsf-712827
Athearn ATH70744 HO 50' Superior Plug Box, BNSF #712827

MODEL FEATURES:

Separately applied brake wheel and ladders

70-ton roller bearing trucks

33” machined metal wheels with RP25 contours

Weighted for optimum performance

Body-mounted McHenry® operating scale knuckle couplers

Highly-detailed, injection-molded body

Painted and printed for realistic decoration

All models are representative of prototypical paint schemes

Minimum radius: 18”

PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO:

Railroad boxcars are perhaps not only the best-recognized pieces of equipment ever put into service but also one of the most identifiable symbols of the industry itself. During the early years of the industry freight was hauled on simple flatcars or early gondolas. This model is based on a late 1960’s design built by Fruit Growers Express. As they were insulated, the cars were well suited to handle canned foods or other temperature-sensitive cargo. The 10ft wide plug doors allowed for a better seal against outside temperature intrusion, as well as ease of forklift loading and a smooth interior wall. What made boxcars great, at least in the eyes of the railroads, was, their ability to haul about anything! Please welcome the AutoFlood III rapid discharge hopper car for another run with awesome schemes! Beginning production in 2004, the all-aluminum body prototype has been produced in the thousands and has traversed all over North America. With millions of tons of coal per year being mined and hauled out of various locations across the country, you would be hard pressed to not have seen one of these prototype cars in a modern day coal train. This 4200 cubic foot, exterior post prototype (not to be confused with other prototype exterior post or interior post models) is primarily used as a rapid discharge car which can unload the payload in a matter of seconds via the bottom bay doors. However, the car can also be equipped with rotary couplers, as indicated by the color blocks on the end of the car, for either rotary or bottom discharge unloading based on the infrastructure at the final destination The AutoFlood III Coal Hopper features:

Die-cast frame and floor for optimum car weight

Full interior rivet and K-member details

Super-detailed end cages including separate air and brake piping

Barber S-2 100-ton trucks with metal wheels

Hopper bays feature highly-detailed outlet gates

Etched, see-through end cross-over platforms

Full end detail, including uncoupling levers

Separate grab irons installed at the factory

Accurate paint and lettering

Removable coal load included

Multiple road numbers available for each scheme

Available in singles or multi-packs*

Multi-packs boxed for individual sale

NOW RELAUNCHED! We are proud to introduce the HO Scale NSC 73’ Centerbeam Car. Over 20,000 examples of this car were produced by National Steel Car, between 1987 through the mid-2000s, with some car variations along the way. Whenever you see a general merchandise freight pass by you, there’s a high probability that you will see at least four or more centerbeams mixed in. Have you taken notice of the roadnames/ownership of those cars? Centerbeams are unique in that they are owned by large Class I railroads, leasing companies and smaller shortlines. The wood industry is so lucrative that even our new run of the HO Scale 73’ NSC Centerbeam is no stranger to a wide variety of roadnames! Cold-rolled or hot-rolled, varying in width from less than an inch to ten feet, and ranging in thickness from 1/64th of an inch to 1/4th of an inch, the steel was originally cut into sheets in customer specified lengths. After World War II, winding the steel strip into a coil almost completely replaced the sheets. The steel coil with 3,000 to 5,000 feet of steel is much easier to handle and transport than a stack of steel sheets. Coils are also far more versatile than a sheet that may be too long for one usage or too short for another.

The biggest challenge for railroads and the automobile industry, the primary user of coiled steel, was how to transport it efficiently. In the 1960s, the Ford Motor Company, working with the Detroit Toledo & Ironton and the Chesapeake & Ohio railroads, came up with the design of the coil steel car. The original design was a heavy-duty frame with two 24-foot troughs covered by hoods made of thin steel. The troughs and movable load dividers prevented the coils from rolling side-to-side or sliding while the hoods protected the coils from the weather. Several freight car builders built coil steel cars, including Thrall Car Manufacturing which built these 48-foot, twin hood cars in the 1980s and 1990s. The first Thrall cars had a 100-ton capacity, but later versions were built to a 125-ton capacity. Wearing the protective hoods on, the car can carry coils up to 7 feet in diameter.

They can carry coils up to 10 feet with the hoods removed. The flat-top hoods from the first designs have been replaced with a rounded top design that is both easier to manufacture and is stronger.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0753/7023/4136/files/scaletrains-sxt40272-rivet-counter-ho-scale-thrall-2-hood-coil-steel-car-bnsf-wedge-hoods-534205-freight-cars-212.jpg?v=1776965435
athearn-ath15677-ho-rtr-57-trinity-spine-car-bnsf-300589-3
Athearn ATH15677 HO RTR 57' Trinity Spine Car, BNSF #300589 (3)

MODEL FEATURES:

Precision die-cast metal spine structure

Etched metal walkways

Separately applied brake piping

Fine ladder detail

Weighted for optimal performance

McHenry® scale knuckle spring couplers installed

33” solid nickel silver wheels with RP25 contours operate on all popular brands of track

Trailer hitches come separately in raised and collapsed configurations so the customer can apply them to the model to suit their preferences

Minimum radius: 20”

PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO:

The prototype for our model is based on a Trinity-built car owned by the TTX Company. As 45' and 48' containers and trailers entered domestic service in the 1990s, North American railroads soon needed a car that could better handle both types of equipment. Freight car builder Gunderson answered the call with a 48' version of its popular 40' well car. The versatile 48' Gunderson all-purpose well car even had trailer hitches at each end so it could handle both container and trailer traffic. Although their numbers have declined in recent years as 53' cars became more prevalent in the 21st century, many 48' cars can still be found hauling 20 to 48-foot containers in the well with a longer container stacked on top. The superdetailed WalthersProto model is an easy way to add some "vintage" character to your modern era intermodal fleet.
